Terms of use

Every Chapter helps you tell your life story in a conversation with Emily, an AI interviewer. It can turn what you say into written stories, recordings and transcripts, and, if you choose a printed-book offering, a book.

Your account

You can sign in with an emailed code, a password, or Google. Keep access to your account and email secure. A gift is attached to the account that explicitly accepts it. A recipient can begin talking from an invitation before creating an account; those early words do not become part of their book unless the gift is claimed and the conversation is saved to their account.

Your words and photographs

You keep your rights in the words, recordings and photographs you provide. We use them to provide the service: saving conversations and transcripts, writing and revising stories, and preparing the book you choose. A family member may submit photographs for your review; they are not added to your book unless you keep them. Share only material you have permission to provide. Your book is built from your own words, and you decide what belongs in it.

AI and review

Emily and the writing and book-editing tools use AI. They can misunderstand or make mistakes. Please review and correct your stories and book proof before approving them. We do not approve a book for print or place a print order without your instruction.

Purchases and gifts

Available offerings include a life sketch, recordings with a transcript, and a printed book. Prices and the selected offering are shown before payment. Stripe handles checkout. For a new gift, the giver supplies the recipient’s email address; after a confirmed purchase we prepare an email invitation and provide a private link for the giver to share. The recipient chooses whether to accept the gift with their own account. Keep private invitation links with the intended recipient. A printed book is prepared and sent to the printer only after the owner takes the required review and ordering steps; delivery details are needed for shipping.

How long you can record

Offerings bought after launch include one year to record new conversations with Emily. For a purchase for yourself, the year begins when your payment is confirmed. For a gift, the year begins only once the recipient has accepted the gift with their account and begun talking; if they have already started talking before accepting, it begins when they accept. A gift invitation must still be accepted within 60 days of purchase. A year ends on the same calendar date twelve months later (a year starting on February 29 ends on February 28).

When the year ends, new conversations stop. You can still read, listen to, edit and review everything already saved, including stories, recordings and transcripts, and if your purchase included a printed book you can still finish it and order it. Renewing for more recording time is optional; we never charge for it automatically, and any renewal option and price will be shown to you before you choose it. Accounts that had access before this one-year rule began keep recording without an end date.

Refunds and returns

If you change your mind, email hello@everychapter.org within 30 days of your purchase. As long as no printed book from that purchase has been sent to the printer, we will give you a full refund. This applies to purchases for yourself and to gifts.

If a gift can’t be delivered or hasn’t been accepted after 30 days, contact us and we will look at a refund, or at moving the gift to someone else. Each request is reviewed by a person; refunds and transfers are not automatic.

Each printed book is made to order from the proof you approve. Once it has gone to the printer, we can’t take it back or exchange it because you changed your mind, or because of a mistake that could be seen in the approved proof.

If your book arrives damaged, has a printing defect, or isn’t the book you ordered, email us within 30 days of shipment. Please include your order details and photos of the problem. We will arrange a replacement or a refund, whichever fits the situation.

Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the law that applies to you.

Text reminders

Storytelling reminders are optional, separate from account use, and described in the text message terms. A giver cannot sign a recipient up for them.

Questions and account choices

In Settings you can turn reminders off or start your story again. Starting your story again is not the same as deleting your account or your purchase and print-order history. For questions about your account or information, see our privacy notice or contact us at hello@everychapter.org.
